The Pink!

Hi Dolls! I know that I am late getting to this post, but seven days remain in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I’m sure that like me, you’ve been personally touched in some way by this insidious disease. Annually, I blog about beauty, fashion and lifestyle products, that if purchased, support breast cancer research and awareness. Once again, some of our favorite brands have teamed to raise money for organizations like the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Look Good Feel Good and City of Hope. Peep the deets below on some of products that have gone pink for October. Also, take a moment while to learn some of the myths vs. truths about breast cancer.

And remember, giving is gorgeous!

The Breast Cancer Myth. Finding a lump in your breast means you have breast cancer.

The Truth. Only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer.  But if you discover a persistent lump in your breast or notice any changes in breast tissue, it should never be ignored. It is very important that you see a physician for a clinical breast exam. He or she may possibly order breast imaging studies to determine if this lump is of concern or not.

Take charge of your health by performing routine breast self-exams, establishing ongoing communication with your doctor, getting an annual clinical breast exam, and scheduling your routine screening mammograms.

Crème de la Mer Breast Cancer Campaign

Now, until December 31st, in support of the Estee Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, La Mer will donate $10 from the purchase price of this limited edition Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream 0.5oz with a maximum donation of $52,680, to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

The Breast Cancer Myth: If you are at risk for breast cancer, there is little you can do but watch for the signs.

The Truth. There’s a lot that women can do to lower their risk, including losing weight if they’re obese, getting regular exercise, lowering or eliminating alcohol consumption, being rigorous about examining their own breasts, and having regular clinical exams and mammograms. Quitting smoking wouldn’t hurt either.

Some high-risk women also chose to have a prophylactic mastectomy to decrease their risk by 90%. They can take other proactive steps such as having regular MRIs, exploring chemo prevention with treatments such as tamoxifen, and participating in clinical trials.

Bobbi Brown Pink Peony Illuminating Bronzing Powder Set

Created by Bobbi in support of the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign’s 25th anniversary,  with every purchase Bobbi will donate $11 dollars to BCRF with a maximum donation of $90,000.

The Breast Cancer Myth: Breast cancer always comes in the form of a lump.

The Truth. A lump may indicate breast cancer (or one of many benign conditions), but women should also be on the alert for other kinds of changes that may be signs of cancers. These include swelling; skin irritation or dimpling; breast or nipple pain; nipple retraction (turning inward); redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin; or a discharge other than breast milk.

Breast cancer can also spread to underarm lymph nodes and cause swelling there before a tumor in the breast is large enough to be felt. On the other hand, a mammogram may pick up breast cancer that has not outward symptoms at all.

BCA Faux Fur Slides

From the Breast Cancer Awareness collection, Forever 21 will donate $1 from the purchase of every item sold between now and October 30th. Proceeds will be donated to The Keep A Breast Foundation.

The Breast Cancer Myth. A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread.

The Truth. A mammogram, or x-ray of the breast, currently remains the gold standard for the early detection of breast cancer. Breast compression, while getting a mammogram cannot cause cancer to spread. According to the National Cancer Institute, “The benefits of mammography, however early, always outweigh the potential harm from the radiation exposure. Mammograms require very small doses of radiation. The risk of  harm from this radiation exposure is extremely low.

The standard recommendation is an annual mammographic screening for women beginning at age 40. Base your decision on your physician’s recommendation and be sure to discuss and remaining questions to concern you may have with your physician.

David Yurman Starburst Single-Station Cable Bracelet with Pink Sapphires, 3mm

During October 2017, David Yurman is donating 20% from the purchase price of this Starburst bracelet with pink sapphires to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The Breast Cancer Myth. Men do not get breast cancer; it affects women only.

The Truth. Quite the contrary, each year it is estimated that approximately 2,190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 410 will die. While this percentage is still small, men should also check themselves periodically by doing a breast self-exam while in the shower and reporting any changes to their physicians.

Breast cancer in men is usually detected as a hard lump underneath the nipple and areola.  Men carry a higher mortality than women do, primarily because awareness among men is less and they are less likely to assume a lump is breast cancer, which can cause a delay in seeking treatment.

Clinique Great Skin, Great Cause Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness, this luxurious formula is paired with a pink BCA key ring. $10 from each purchase is donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, dedicated to finding a cure.

The Breast Cancer Myth. Drinking milk (or dairy) causes breast cancer.

The Truth. Several myths persist about the correlation between dairy intake and the increased risk of breast cancer.  Over many decades, studies have shown that dairy consumption does not increase the risk of breast cancer.

Alex and Ani Spiral Sun Charm Bangle

Beginning in January and continuing through December 2017, ALEX AND ANI will donate 20% of the purchase price* from each Spiral Sun Charm sold, with a minimum donation of $25,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation whose charitable purpose is to fund the world’s most promising research to eradicate breast cancer.

The Breast Cancer Myth. If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are likely to develop breast cancer, too.

The Truth. While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. Statistically only about 10% of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of this disease.

If you have a first degree relative with breast cancer: If you have a mother, daughter, or sister who developed breast cancer below the age of 50, you should consider some form of regular diagnostic breast imaging starting 10 years before the age of your relative’s diagnosis.

If you have a second degree relative with breast cancer: If you have had a grandmother or aunt who was diagnosed with breast cancer, your risk increases slightly, but it is not in the same risk category as those who have a first degree relative with breast cancer.

If you have multiple generations diagnosed with breast cancer on the same side of the family, or if there are several individuals who are first degree relatives to one another, or several family members diagnosed under age 50, the probability increases that there is a breast cancer gene contributing to the cause of this familial history.

Beautyblender Bubble

We love a Beautyblender for everything from concealer and foundation application, to contouring. With a purchased of this blush-toned  bubble, Beautyblendwr is donating 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale each to Look Good Feel Better.

The Breast Cancer Myth. Breast cancer is contagious.

The Truth. You cannot catch breast cancer or transfer it to someone else’s body. Breast cancer is the result of uncontrolled cell growth of mutated cells that begin to spread into other tissues within the breast. However, you can reduce your risk by practicing a healthy lifestyle, being aware of the risk factors, and following an early detection plan so that you will be diagnosed early if breast cancer were to occur.

Venus et Fleur Floral Arrangements

I have been obsessed with Venus et Fleur floral arrangements since I started seeing pics of them posted on IG. So unique and stunning, the gorgeous suede boxes are full of perfectly pink roses that live up to a full year — no watering required. Venus et Fleur is donating 20 percent of the proceeds on the sale of its pink-collection boxes for the month of October to breast cancer research at City of Hope.

The Breast Cancer Myth. If the gene mutation BRCA1 or BRCA2 is detected in your DNA, you will definitely develop breast cancer.

The Truth. According to the National Cancer Institute, regarding families who are known to carry BRCA1 or BRCA2, “not every woman in such families carries a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, and not every cancer in such families is linked to a harmful mutation in one of these genes. Furthermore, not every woman who has a harmful BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation will develop breast and/or ovarian cancer. But, a woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 is about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation.” For people who discover they have the harmful mutation, there are various proactive measures that can be done to reduce risk. These include taking a hormonal therapy called Tamoxifen or deciding to take a surgical prevention approach which is to have bilateral prophylactic mastectomies, usually done with reconstruction.  Most women will also have ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as well since there is no reliable screening test for the early stages of developing ovarian cancer.

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water

To support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Smashbox dressed up their best-selling Photo Finish Primer Water with the iconic pink ribbon exclusively for the Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign. For every sale, Smashbox will donate $5 to BCRF.

The Breast Cancer Myth. Antiperspirants and deodorants cause breast cancer.

The Truth. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) are not aware of any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer.

Estée Lauder Pink Ribbon Knockout Eyes Gift Set

The most colorful way to support breast cancer research: a deluxe collection with shades and essentials for high-style eyes. Estée Lauder will donate 100% of each purchase of this product to the BCRF.

This is L-I-Y-A-H …

Hi Dolls! I don’t know about you, but I love a new product/makeup release. Some, I purchase immediately. Others, I wait and check out the online reviews; and yet other’s I never purchase. But sometimes there is a product release that whether you need or not, you make the purchase. Enter Aaliyah X MAC! Yes, you heard correctly, MAC will be honoring the late R&B star with the Aaliyah Collection.

The backstory. For sometime a petition has been circulating on Change.org requesting that MAC honor the “One in a Million” songstress. 26K + signatures later and MAC has teamed up with her estate to launch a makeup collection set for a summer 2018 debut.

Announced on the eve of the 16th anniversary of her passing, MAC shared via Instagram, “Aaliyah is truly one in a million—an unstoppable icon whose groundbreaking work in R&B music and film inspires us all. Today we join Aaliyah’s countless fans in celebrating her with the announcement of the MAC Aaliyah collection.” Fans quickly picked up on the hashtag #AaliyahforMAC

Known for her sultriness, beautiful face, tresses and edgy fashion, it is expected that MAC will capture Aliyah’s spirit with a collection to match.

What’s Making Me Swoon!

Hey Dolls! The summer heat is “doing the most” and the fragrances I wear during cooler months are simply too heavy for this time of year. Enter, the search. I mentioned in an earlier post that I’m attracted to packaging. Clean and minimal normally grabs me. I was in Sephora on several occasions, the last to pick up the a travel size fragrance; but wasn’t sure what I wanted. As I browsed, I spied the Maison Margiela ‘REPLICA’ fragrance collection. Of course the packaging drew me in – simple bottle, clean, minimal, black and white labeling. I’d been meaning to try several of the ‘REPLICA’ scents; but hadn’t made time.

What to choose? Beach Walk, Jazz Club, Lazy Sunday Morning, By the Fireplace? Don’t you love all of the names? I opted to try Lazy Sunday Morning and Beach Walk.

Lazy Sunday Morning is a floral fragrance combining notes of Aldehydes, Pear, Lily of the Valley, Iris, Rose Absolue, Orange Flower, White Musk, Indian Patchouli Oil, Ambrette Seeds Absolute. While a beautiful scent, as the label suggests, it reminded of the linen spray I use on freshly laundered sheets.

Up next, Beach Walk. Combining notes of Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Lemon, Ylang Ylang, Coconut Milk, Heliotrope, Musk, Cedarwood, Benzoin, the scent is truly a mid-afternoon stroll along the beach. Jackpot! I should have known this Miami-born Doll would be in love the any fragrance named Beach Walk.

I purchased both a travel/purse, as well as full-size bottle.

Why ‘REPLICA?”

Each fragrance is said “tell a story with every spritz,” evoking a memory of a special place and time, allowing you to “relive the magic.”

A little about the bottle …

“The silhouette of each ‘REPLICA’ bottle is inspired by classic apothecary jars, allowing the collection to be instantly identifiable. Each bottle carries a 100 percent cotton label, which is printed using black ink text and resembles the tags used on the clothing and accessories for the ‘REPLICA’ couture collection. The unique pumps are wrapped with a rope to symbolize the authentic reproduction of the original ‘REPLICA’ couture line.”

What’s me swoon? ‘REPLICA’ Beach Walk by Maison Margiela.

Because on Sundays, We Mask …

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Dolls know that I love beauty products. I can spend hours in Sephora. By the way, I just reached VIB Rouge status. (Those that know, know.) I also love trying the latest products based on beauty influencer recommendations. My latest beauty obsession? Sheet masks. I have a box full. One for every skincare need – acne, aging, brightening, blemishes, hydration, hyperpigmentation, and healing, I am particularly fond of the Korean masks.

I reserve Sunday evenings for masking. I am usually winding down from a whirlwind weekend and have the time to sit still. Although I have a wide selection of masks, I find myself repeatedly grabbing the Primary Raw Do You 2-Step Milk Peeling Kit.

The two-step kit uses an AHA Milkpeel oversized cotton swab and Soy Milk-infused microfiber sheet mask to combat dullness, uneven texture and skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles and large pores.

Step one involves swabbing the AHA Milkpeel solution in the first pouch all over your face, as evenly as possible. While it doesn’t appear so, there is more than enough solution to cover your entire face. Make sure you get the remaining product at the bottom of the pouch.

Step two, place the sheet mask over top of the solution. You should feel a little tingle, but it’s not at all uncomfortable. The  instructions suggest leaving on the mask for about 15 – 20 minutes. I tend to be aggressive and will lay down with it on for about an hour. (Disclaimer: Do what works for you).

The first time I used this mask I was hooked. I know it sounds cliche, but my skin was truly brighter, with a smoother texture. With consistent use, combined with my daily skincare routine, I’ve seen a great deal of improvement –  less hyperpigmentation and dullness.

While this is my go-to mask, I will be sharing others that I use over weeks. Why? Because on Sundays, we mask!

Do you mask? What are your favorites?

Until then, keep sharing the pretty!

Countdown to the Fourth

Hi Dolls! The 4th is four days away and I’m thinking cookouts, the beach, and evening fireworks. I’m not one to don holiday colors, with the exception of the 4th. I love to do a little Independence Day red, white and blue. Peep my picks below.

Red …

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time, you know my obsession with red lipstick. I tend to reach for matte reds, but in warmer months, I like to do a gloss. My choice for the 4th, Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in Socialite.

White …

This crisp summer look was inspired by one of my uber stylish girlfriend’s, Shawna W. We were recently at luncheon and she had on a beautiful white linen maxi dress by Theory. The look screams the 4th and can carry me from day to evening.

For a more casual look, how cute would it be to pair this dress with monogrammed white Chuck Taylor’s!

Ok, I love a white manicure. Any of these are perfect for a Fourth of July manicure. I’d also add Opi Funny Bunny, a creamy white staple.

Blue …

Part of the day will surely be spent poolside or on the beach. This calls for the perfect pedi. Why not do your take on flag blue.

What’s Making Me Swoon!

Hey Dolls! I know I’m late to the game, but I have a new obsession – eyebrow stencils! I know, I know. Some of you Dolls are like, “Old news, we’ve moved on to Microblading.” Well, I’m not there yet; and in the meantime eyebrows stencils are making me swoon.

I have my eyebrows done at the Anastasia Brow Bar in Nordstrom. Jessica is amazing. The challenge is that I have naturally fine eyebrows that aren’t thick enough to do the high arch I love. You know the one where it looks like I am giving you the glare of death once I raise a brow. Said solution, Anastasia Eyebrow Stencils!

Inspired by the Golden Ratio, a mathematical ratio of 1.618 to 1, which offers the key to finding balance, symmetry, and beauty, Anastasia created a unique and breakthrough method of shaping brows – the Golden Ratio Technique.

In the world of high arches, her technique involves establishing three precise points (on the brow): one that lies on an imaginary line running vertically through the middle of the nostril; the High Point on the eyebrow arch, which can be found on a line connecting the tip of the nose to the center of the iris; and finally, the point that lies on a line running through the edge of the corresponding nostril through the outer edge of the eye. The High Point divides the eyebrow arch in precisely the Golden Ratio. (Yep, it’s that deep!)

Anastasia’s Eyebrow Stencils, foolproof guides based on the ratio, are made with an easy to use pliable plastic, and come in an arch for every occasion and mood. For my daily go-to, I select the mid-range medium arch. But for a dramatic look, I choose the high arch or I call it the Hannah Brofman brow.

Credit: Ben Rosser

Not sure what shape best fits your face, Anastasia recommends the following:

  • Petite Arch. Recommended for small facial features.
  • Slim High Arch.  Recommended for brows in training, growth challenged, thin or sparse brows.
  • Medium Arch. Recommended for brows with a softer arch that naturally creates less space between the bottom of the brow and the top of the eye.
  • High Arch. Recommended for brows with a higher arch that naturally creates more space between the bottom of the brow and the top of the eye.
  • Full Arch. Recommended for the fullest shape and larger facial features.

Feeling a bit bold, forget the recommendations and play with different shapes.

Check out Anastasia shape and define over-tweezers brows using the high-arch stencil.

To get you started, I suggest picking up the Brow Kit. It has all of the accoutrements you will need to create the perfect brow.

And remember, “eyebrows are sisters, not twins.” | Anastasia

I will post a pic on my Instagram page this week with the full on high-arch; but no judgement Dolls.

2017 Spring Makeup Trends

Dolls know that I love makeup and am completely obsessed with red lipstick. I love perusing the page of magazines, eyeing the latest trends in shadows, bronzers, highlighters, and of course lipsticks. On my last birthday I decided to treat myself to professional photo session, replete with markup artist. Enter Lydia with Eyemagination Imaging and Carla, with Carla Taylor Makeup. The day was truly magical! Peep the makeup artistry and the stunning photos provided by these two talented women!

I was so impressed with Carla’s makeup artistry, I asked her to spill the deets about makeup trends we can expect to see throughout the spring and into the summer. Dolls, meet Carla.

TPD. Tell me a little about your makeup journey. How did you get started as a makeup artist?

CTM. For as long as I can recall, I have always loved makeup! I got started as an artist by others seeing my makeup in college. From seeing me, they then asked me to do their makeup for sorority pageants, etc.

TPD. What are the makeup trends to watch for in during the spring and throughout the remainder of 2017.

CTM. Berry, Berry, Berry!! Berry lips are all the rage this season. In addition, soft, subtle foundation with minimal contouring.

Images: Carla Taylor

TPD. As you know, I’m obsessed with a bold red lip, but have been eye-spying the nude lip trending? Can I still do a red lip? What are the hot nudes?

CTM. Of course you can still wear your fabulous reds! Especially because it is aligned with the current makeup trend! However, somedays you may not have on an outfit that will compliment a red lip. In this case, reach for a nude shade. My absolute favorite is from NARS called Honolulu Honey. I generally do not finish lipsticks but with this shade, I had to use a cotton swab to scrape out what remained in the tube! The great thing about this nude is that it compliments most skin tones effortlessly!

TPD. A flawlessly made-up face mean nothing with well cared for skin? We all want that true, “I woke up like this” look. What are you best tips for stellar skincare, particularly in the winter months?

CTM. Winter months can be harsh on the skin. The key is to MOISTURIZE and stay hydrated!! My go to products are from Luminesce. I use their Youth Restoring Cleanser and their Daily Moisturizing Complex SPF30. The great thing about their products is they use stem cell technology to repair damage to the skin caused by weather, age, etc.

TPD. What are your holy grail products for a fabulous go-to, everyday look?

CTM. My holy grail products are Colour Pop’s Liquid Matte Lipstick in the shade Avenue, Kat Von D’s Lock-it Concealer Cream and last but not least, Becca’s Ultimate Coverage Foundation. These items bring a smile to the 5-minute flawless face they create on me when I need to rush out the door.

TPD. Fortunately, I have you on speed dial, but what should the Pretty Domestic Dolls look for when selecting a makeup artist? What should they expect in terms of service and price?

CTM. I always recommend viewing your prospective artists work first prior to booking them. If they have tons of selfies on their social media, but no pictures of faces they have made up – beware! Be sure that whomever you book will take the time to listen to your wants, as their client.  You should expect to have amazing customer service and clean brushes!

Every artist has different rates. The range you should expect to pay is $125- $250. Their are some cases where you’ll find artists less than $125 and more than $250, depending on who they service most, i.e., cosmetic counters or celebrity clientele.

TPD. Of course wedding season is right around the corner. Talk to the brides. Any advice for bridal makeup?

CTM. Brides, it is best to invest in a quality artist for your big day. You want to make sure that whomever you hire listens to your needs. Consultations should not be optional. Your consult is your interview with the artist to ensure they are the best fit for your big day.  I wouldn’t hire cousin Susie in hopes that you’ll be flawless unless she is skilled. You should be no ones test subject on your special day. 🙂

And a few tips:

  • Keep your makeup timeless, yet flawless.
  • There is no need to have your eyeshadow match your bouquet.
  • Lashes are important!

TPD. Thank you so much Carla. We are loving your flawless face advice. I am sure we will have more questions for you! And thank you Lydia! Your photography skills are EVERYTHING! Dolls, don’t think twice if you need your head shots updated. Skip the selfies!

Until then, keep sharing the pretty,
